Looking into Buddhism?

the number 11 was strong again today
and i turned on the radio in the car, had on a religious station, and before i turned it on i said, " don't want to listen ', and the person on the radio said, ' have to listen ", then turned it off

Proof that determinism is just a pile of crap.

The earliest surviving record of the Buddha's teachings is generally agreed to be the Pali Canon. This forms the basis for Theravadan Buddhism.

good website. Does any buddhists here celebrate the Buddha's birthday? Or what l have heard is called Wesak at the beginning of May, or rather at the full moon on the 9th?

Namaste nativeastral,

thanks for the post.

yes i celebrate Vesak Day. it's three things in one.. the arising of Buddha Shakyamuni, the Awakening of the Buddha Shakyamuni and the Paranibbana of Buddha Shakyamuni.... so we get alot of mileage out of it :)

Vesak is the first full moon in May every year.

do you have some questions regarding the various celebrations?

metta,

hi vajradhara
thanks for responding; no it was only this one in particular as it is coming up and is an important moment in theosophical writings too [as taurus is a sign of desire ruled by venus to be transmuted to higher spiritualization].

Can you expand on your post or point me to links enlarging on the meaning of and underlying reasons for celebrating [apart from commemoration of Buddhi?] eg what is meditated upon exactly, how is the day's events practised etc. What is the significance for this moon, [or any of the moons!] for buddhism:)

the particulars of the celebration vary from country to country.. at least in the Buddhist countries. in non-Buddhist countries it usually varies by the particular school of Buddhadharma that one practices so it won't be too easy to get a general idea in that manner unless one were focusing on a particular culture in which said celebration takes place.

the Buddhadharma, like all the Dharma traditions, uses a lunar calendar rather than a solar calendar and so the moon simply marks the beginning, middle and ending of the month and has no particular astrological significance in this context. there are, of course, a great many astrological traditions to be found in Asia and the subcontinent but those aren't related to Buddhadharma per se.

here's a good link to a basic introduction:

thanks V for pointing me to that link; its just what l need for a presentation for secondary education, so plenty of material at that site. On the page of festivals it says that the full, new and quarter days of the moon are celebrated as holy days in theraveda, in sri lanka [blessings] called poya day- thats why l enquired to you concerning the moon since l know that the full is an important day for monks [for particular mediations? read it somewhere]. l am also gleaning information here on threads you have contributed/started.
thanx
