Just out of curiosity and interest . . .

What kind of operating system do you use? Windows, Mac or Linux?

What browser? Internet Explorer, Netscape or Firefox?

Word processor or text editor? Notepad? Notepad2? Kate? KWrite? NEdit? GEdit? OpenOffice? Microsoft Word?

Anyone here a power user or computer geek?

okee dokee warning opinion ahead...

I'm IBM, microsoft etc. I believe apple mac to be better, but they have a fatal flaw like sony/betamax...not letting the world in to clone. so they are better, more expensive and relegated to a small marketshare.

I'm not savvy enough for linux...I want to open a box and play.

google docs or openoffice at home...msword at work...I am cheap.

firefox...

no geek, know enough to get in trouble...not enough to keep up.

Hi, at home, linux with firefox, thunderbird and openoffice. At work xp with all the microsoft trimmings.
Wil, some of the newer live disk linux distros make it alot easier to get up and running fairly quick, you ought to burn one and give it a spin.

Mac!!! iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo / 4 GB SDRAM / OS X 10.5.6

My wife has a matched pair. Both connected with an Airport Extreme wireless network.

I've been a graphic designer for 20 years and am a Apple True Believer. But the truth is PCs are fine too. Both platforms can get you where you want to go.

What browser? Internet Explorer, Netscape or Firefox?
Safari. Best handling of type I've ever seen. Beautiful display.

Word processor or text editor? Notepad? Notepad2? Kate? KWrite? NEdit? GEdit? OpenOffice? Microsoft Word?
TextEdit for quick stuff. Smultron for webdesign

The only title I will claim is "competent".

For newer computers, instead of a CD-rom, try a live USB drive. Seems I burned out two drives trying out those live CD things. Live CD's can be hard on modern high-speed CD players because of the constant seeks, speeding up and slowing down. If CD's were still running only at 1x - 12x speeds it wouldn't be a big deal, but the industry is contantly pushing the spin rate/cost of motor. CD motors can overheat when they're spinning at 52X (going up and down), and the cheap production motors barely cope. If at all possible, try Linux live with a USB key fob instead of a CD. There are easy instructions on how to do it, plus its cool like having a computer on a keychain. Here is a good place to start: www.pendrivelinux.com

OpenOffice, textedit, and a few obscure ones with an extremely minimalist interface.

Anyone here a power user or computer geek?

No.

Xp for my workstation and Linux on most of the servers that I manage for work,

OS: Slackware, Ubuntu/Kubuntu, Slax, Puppy, Windoze.
Linux/Windoze: Firefox/Netscape
Linux/Windoze: OpenOffice/OpenOffice
Linux/Windoze: TED,Kedit,GEdit. 'Doze: Ted, notepad.

I want to add an RT driver to my Knoppix. It's for my usb wireless. What is a really easy way to make my knoppix let me do this? I've got the tarball, and I've extracted the binaries. There seem to be some permissions issues even though I become the admin. Its looking like I'm going to have to do a bunch of research on how to make bigger loop files etc, then figure out how to get the modules to go in. Then I'll probably have to recompile, but I won't have the kernel source to do it. I'm such a whiner.

Thank you for that link, Drummr! Now just give me some time.

Google has announced that it is working on an open source Google Chrome OS for netbooks, and ultimately for desktops. Google would be piggybacking Google Gears onto it Google Chrome browser, all open source.

Makes me want to be a programmer again.

Most Interesting.

Love that Open source(ery), lets you know what evil lurks in the hearts of code. Remember to backup, examine the before and after of effects to the scripts, and RTFM (Research Technique, Function Methodically).:D

Oh, I see. I wondered how Google planned to write a new OS without getting sued to death over it. The Linux kernel developers have a process that avoids software patent infringement plus the 'Colonel' has already got strong political representation.

I use the mac. That makes me kool right? Guys?!

I use firefox with an awesome Nightmare Before Christmas skin.

I use Scrivener for word processor thing mostly, Pages for finishing touches.

And I dispute the fact that I am a geek of any kind!

(geek issues: Parents = Geek + nerd. Solve for me)

I have geek origins! Wah!

Meow! :D

Immortality,

how do you like pages? Have you used Mellel before and how does it compare?
