on the contrary, i think it more strongly indicates that a great many scientists and engineers read sci-fi when they were kids, saw television programs like Star Trek (no mistaking the flip cell phone, is there?) and so forth which got them interested in science, per se, in the first place.
i've seen several interesting documentaries regarding various projects at the JPL and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Labs and, by and large, all the scientists that commented on it indicated that it was seeing things on star trek and star wars et al that got them interested and involved in their careers.
of course... inspiration is inspiration and can arise from a whole host of unusual sources!
