Why Would an Atheist Join a Faith Based Forum?

That's true about the term "atheist" toady, BigJoe. However, in older, archaic usage, it also meant someone who had a different concept of God. Unfortunately, some fundies today still use it in that sense.

True! Even today some believe if you do not believe in the one true God you do not believe in God regardless of what you believe in.

"Some" believe"? Some? Try multitudes, which would be closer to the mark.
Not that I think all must believe as I do to believe and while I'm quite sure it was not your intention, your statement here warms my heart. Why? ...because it reminds me that the sowers of disbelief are but a dime a dozen and by no means a deterrent to the truly faithful.

You are quite correct about that, and that was my point. Only difference is you think that is a good thing and I do not! On the other hand the size of the nonreligious group is growing steadily, but then so is fundamentalism in all the Abrahamic faiths. If current trends continue we will end up with two armed camps, the nonbelievers and the extremists.

Nice one Auss.;) You know, there was a PBS series a while back called, 'Closer to Truth' with Robert Lawrence Kuhn. Essentially he set out to either prove or disprove the existence of God by interviewing various religious scholars, clergy and scientist. Some were devote believers, others decidedly not. Strange, but in watching the series, though no definitive conclusions were ever reached, it was always the non-believers that seemed th strengthen my faith and so it is here on the forum.

Presuppositions of ancient theism often precludes other choices, even other theist choices. I have watched some of the programs, and I do not believe his goal was to disprove the existence of God. The program explores alternatives not absolutes.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I like Robert Kuhn. He's obviously very intelligent, yet he's quite down to earth.

There's something I've always been curious about and since there seems to be a number of Atheists on the forum, I thought I'd ask. Why would an Atheist join a faith based forum?

I am an atheist and have been one my whole life, but do to the voices in my head telling me other wise I came to this forum to seek intelligent and meaningful responses from a broad range of believers. My voices do not say that there is a god but they say that we are all inside of something, inside of something, inside of something so if we are all inside of something, becoming ourselves and everything seen and observed is inside of this same something then it is perceivable that there may be a god and everything is inside of him.

So, has anything you've read thus far sparked your interest?

Hello NJ

I think I am leaning in many directions, some religious and some just mythology. I kind of have a Hodge podge of ideas that are coming together to form one main theory or belief.

I'm glad to hear it. It's a marvelous feeling when the pieces of the puzzle start to form a coherent picture.

I wouldn't go as far as to say coherent but more abstract. I get to see all the pieces but I do not know how they all go together yet.

Thanks Powessy. Can't say I've understood everything you've posted, but your response here may be the most honest answer I've received.

When I first started to come to this site I was looking for answers along with signs of what I call shadows. Many of you come here to this site or others to seek answers to questions you have about religion and spirituality and is why the shadows find you. When we ask questions we are trying to become ourselves this is shown in many religions, some religions believe that the harder our lives and the more we suffer the closer to god we become in a way this is true, though not necessary. You see the more we suffer the more we are trying to become ourselves, or I could say the more your higher self hears you and tries to become you. I have found truth to god in the old religions going back 5 thousand or so years ago until the begging half of Hinduism where the truth faded. I also found these truths in the Annunakis, the Sumerians, and early Egyptian teachings. I still find this site to hold an abundance of knowledge in any area or field of religion no matter what path the seeker is on.

I have always been interested in religion and love to have conversations about it, asking and having civil discussions. Overall it is something that interests me and I love to learn more about it.

Welcome, philotrain!
If you want you can post about yourself under the introduction, I'm sure people would like to know more. Like...your love for trains.

Yes, welcome philotrain! We looked forward to hearing more about you.

If we want to put people in neat boxes this might be a direction.
...sorry for the size.
