Dragons everywhere you look!

In my view the key aspect of western dragons is that their main characteristic is covetousness or desire...the etymology of the word dragon is Greek (derkomai) "to see clearly"...the serpant in the Garden of Eden appealed to the covetousness of Eve and so we have the phrase "apple of my eye" to describe something we truly desire......Charles Spurgeon spoke of the "basilisk stare of sin"...the key aspect of sin is selfishness and the dragons were great hoarders of wealth and therefore were selfish...

The mythological metaphor of defeating a dragon is symbolic of overcoming our own selfishness and desires and thereby diminishing our over-identification with the ego.

A bit of Job... Sounds mighty dragonish to me.. :) Maybe dragons are dinosaurs but the myths survived because people actually saw them and told stories... Matter of fact all of Job 40-41 speak of Leviathan and Behemoth. Fascinating how the bible proves itself as science develops.

11 Who has preceded Me, that I should pay him? Everything under heaven is Mine. 12 "I will not conceal his limbs, His mighty power, or his graceful proportions. 13 Who can remove his outer coat? Who can approach him with a double bridle? 14 Who can open the doors of his face, With his terrible teeth all around? 15 His rows of scales are his pride, Shut up tightly as with a seal; 16 One is so near another That no air can come between them; 17 They are joined one to another, They stick together and cannot be parted. 18 His sneezings flash forth light, And his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. 19 Out of his mouth go burning lights; Sparks of fire shoot out. 20 Smoke goes out of his nostrils, As from a boiling pot and burning rushes. 21 His breath kindles coals, And a flame goes out of his mouth. 22 Strength dwells in his neck, And sorrow dances before him.
Behemoth, is generally identified as the hippopotamus. and the
Leviathan as a crocodile

In some interpretations I have heard this. I have also seen multiple references from old British sailors maps that indicate Leviathan was a sea serpent, although there are various representations ranging from the Kraken to something like Nessie.

I noticed in this post dragons are spoken of as if they do not exist. They do, they are in the aetheric realms and people can be taught to see these, just as they can be taught to see Nature People.

I once got to read a very old news paper clipping from a town out west during the "pony express" times...... If I can track down the woman who had it I will ask for a scanned copy. It showed a picture of a pony express rider with a very large claw decorating the top of his flag pole. The general gist of the article was how frightened pony express riders were of animals they described as flying, giant lizards and this man had killed one........
Wouldn't know how to tell if it was faked. I was a teen when I saw it. It was in a protective casing? Any one else ever hear of stuff like that??

I just think that there are too many worldwide stories -crossing too many cultures and languages to ignore it. Truth becomes legend and myth..... kwim?

there are so many legends about dragons because the dragon is a symbol of a deeper knowledge that is buried in the legend itself .... in a sense we are all dragons because we each hold the energy of this knowledge but the energy does not move when you are grounded to the earth and the material world .... I teach my grandson about dragon energy and he was told that not everyone believes in dragons .... but it is not the dragon that we speak of, it is the spiralling energy that moves in the body .... it is said that "only the emperor can ride the dragon to the top of the mountain", but that is not the truth, anyone can ride the dragon to the top of the mountain once you remove the barriers .... as far as I can tell, all legends (regardless of culture) have at least four levels of meaning .... one must be able to dive deeply into the ancient ocean to unveil the most sacred meaning .... my grandson's nickname is "mo'o" which means "dragon" .... you can search the world and keep looking for the answer to the great mysteries, but the answer is within your reach and you need to stop look outward .... read the legends of king arthur with new eyes and you will see things you never saw before .... the quest for the holy grail is entwined with the knowledge of dragons .... enjoy the stories .... me ke aloha pumehana, pohaikawahine

DRAGON

From the Greek dra′kon, depicting a terrifying monster, a serpentlike devourer. It occurs 13 times in the Bible but only in the highly symbolic book of Revelation, and it represents Satan the Devil.

revelation 12
And a great sign was seen in heaven, a woman arrayed with the sun, and the moon was beneath her feet, and on her head was a crown of twelve stars, 2 and she was pregnant. And she cries out in her pains and in her agony to give birth.

3

And another sign was seen in heaven, and, look! a great fiery-colored dragon, with seven heads and ten horns and upon its heads seven diadems;

4 and its tail drags a third of the stars of heaven, and it hurled them down to the earth. And the dragon kept standing before the woman who was about to give birth, that, when she did give birth, it might devour her child.

5

And she gave birth to a son, a male, who is to shepherd all the nations with an iron rod. And her child was caught away to God and to his throne.

6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and sixty days.

7

And war broke out in heaven: Mi´cha·el and his angels battled with the dragon, and the dragon and its angels battled

8 but it did not prevail, neither was a place found for them any longer in heaven.

9 So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.

10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
"Now have come to pass the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ, because the accuser of our brothers has been hurled down, who accuses them day and night before our God!

11 And they conquered him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their witnessing, and they did not love their souls even in the face of death.

12 On this account be glad, YOU heavens and YOU who reside in them! Woe for the earth and for the sea, because the Devil has come down to YOU, having great anger, knowing he has a short period of time."

13

Now when the dragon saw that it was hurled down to the earth, it persecuted the woman that gave birth to the male child.

14 But the two wings of the great eagle were given the woman, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place; there is where she is fed for a time and times and half a time away from the face of the serpent.

15

And the serpent disgorged water like a river from its mouth after the woman, to cause her to be drowned by the river.

16 But the earth came to the woman’s help, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river that the dragon disgorged from its mouth.

17 And the dragon grew wrathful at the woman, and went off to wage war with the remaining ones of her seed, who observe the commandments of God and have the work of bearing witness to Jesus.

REVELATION 12

its all happening in the last days , and that original serpent is ANGRY but no worries he only has a short time left .

AN ANGEL with a big key is going to lock him up for a 1000 years

And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven with the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he seized the dragon, the original serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.

3 And he hurled him into the abyss and shut [it] and sealed [it] over him, that he might not mislead the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After these things he must be let loose for a little while.

...while they are still revered as symbols of wisdom in South Asia. Obviously something has been going on here for a long time.

flow....

There are at least six known types to be sure. I have a book in the library here at the house that passionately narrates of them. My mystical collection will pensively haunt the dragon enthusiast.

Namaste all,

in ancient China and, to a large extent to this day, the Dragon symbolizes the ineffable human spirit, it is this which unites with the T'ao in T'aoist spiritual alchemy. many of the Complete Reality School texts make use of this particular symbology in some interesting and creative ways.

i've always considered that the legend of dragons was borne from finding dinosaur fossils.

same, Vaj.
but wouldnt it be cool to actually have proof of a real dragon, not a dinosaur.

Not to seem flip, but is there really any difference? Both are big lizards. Aside from the mythos of flying, the typical "dragon" could pass for a dinosaur, I would think. But then, would the typical dinosaur pass for a dragon?

Namaste Grey,

i think that i'd agree with Juan, the seem to be one and the same to me. sure, dino's don't go around breathing fire on people and most of them couldn't fly but just consider how incredible it must have been to be living in the middle ages and come across a partially or completely exposed dino fossil, especially of the larger ones! it would have been nearly unimaginalbe.

the use of dragon symbology is ubiquitous in China but almost unheard of in India. there are some uses of the dragon motif but not nearly to the same degree or even in the same pursuit is such discussed in India. the India motif usually puts and Elephant into the role that the Chinese place the Dragon. whilst it seems natural enough for the Indians to choose the elephant i am still working through how the dragon came to be used in China in the manner it was.

Not sure how much it might help, Vajra, but another aspect I understand to be Taoist is Feng Shui, and how certain mountain ranges are considered "the dragon's back."

I read once of the concept I want to say is called "white tiger, green dragon." Houses built in this manner were considered to be built with good Feng Shui, although there are certainly many more aspects to consider. I find Feng Shui intriguing, but just beyond my grasp of understanding at this time. Perhaps more learning will come in time.

Is the dragon not associated with the subtle energy system? earl

Even as a symbol of those who have experienced what comes as a result, eventually, after full understanding, awareness and control of such has been established?

It seems quite possible that the dragon motif is an elaboration of the serpent. In Indian mythology the dragon is not specifically identified but the characteristics can be recognized in the form of serpents and crocodiles (naga and makara).

The Dragon symbolizes the ineffable human spirit
My impression is that oriental dragons embodied some of the evil spirits that pervade Chinese folk religions, but they also have a security guard function of sorts: they protect property and treasure.

Dragons are also protectors of family. It is said that the real treasure of the dragon is not the riches, but the loving relationship between family members.
