Occupations

a family is really the best example for being grateful that one at least has a job as opposed to the poor souls in third world countries who just don't have the means to live as well as us westerners. we really have no right to complain or be depressed.

Being a materially spoiled brat is no guarantee of happiness though is it; hence all the depression in the “western world.” Granted, if you are so materially poor that you are in danger of starvation, dehydration or shelter this is the “bottom line” for good mental health; but there’s plenty of homeless, hungry people in the west too. If you have these basics (food, water, shelter) then the happiness “trick” comes from the mind, it is a state of mind, not something derived from acquiring or possessing material goods. So there’s plenty of materially poor folk in the world who are a lot happier than us spoiled western brats. IMO.

I met a man once, a cleaner of toilets... I too was a cleaner of toilets, we were both no-nonsense northerners, and we got on well...

He put me onto Plato...

The best pc of advice he ever gave me was... it doesn't matter what u do; clean toilets, sweep up broken biscuits, manage a multimillion pound a year company... what u do as such, doesn't matter... far more important is how u do it...

even if u think a task is menial, beneath u, u should still do it with pride, and own it, for it is ur work...

I think he makes sense...

we all have dreams... there is no need for the dream to stop... in the meantime, if u sell TV's, there is no shame there...

it will be as soulless as you make it... u can do "good" there, in ur job, by doing the best job u can, and being decent and pleasant and polite and helpful, and understanding, and not ripping ppl off, or hurting them...

u can raise money at xmas for a charity in-store, u could get all ur staff to sign up as blood or organ donors, u could raffle off a big TV and give the proceeds to ur local hospice...

there's always room for improvement...

as for the big expensive house... it's not essential... even if u became homeless, the State would find u somewhere to live... ur never actually gonna live on the streets, not here... all the rest? private school educations, Kumon maths tutors, horses and lessons and expensive holidays...

it's not really that important... it just appears that way... it depends what angle u view it from...

I see what you are saying FK I haven't shame it is just my work is finished by 10 every morning... I am there til 5..... I have -nothing, nada to do.... It isn't that I am spoilt, or that I feel it is beneath me, or that I am ashamed of what I do... It is that I don't do that much... I want to do more. heh..... :) And it seems so hard to find another job.

My fiancé works at a supermarket. When we get a little more settled, he's going to complete his degree, but he's working at the store now so that I don't have to work. And he's proud of his job because he can support us, pay the rent and buy the food and take me out on dates once a week, and I don't have to work.

It's great advice -- he sees his job not for what it is, namely, a lousy job stocking shelves, but rather for what it allows him to do, which is support his wife and keep her happy.

He's the best damn night captain there, too, he just got promoted to day shift. I'm so proud of him. :D

Stock price in WB is doing surprisingly well, considering - hope the new employer looks after you, but if not, let me know for dishing it out on Citi. :)

lol I just recently found out that Im safer than most. I think WB was actually smart to do what they did when they did.

Alex,

One must make the most of one's circumstances old boy. Your job sounds great, easy going, surf the net and be on here a lot, easy money, pays more or less for what you need and gives the animals a comfortable life (most important!)
I know what you are saying and feeling as I have been there myself. You got to try and change your mindset, not the job so much dude.

A virtually complete lack of "stress" can actually be as stressing as having too much of the stuff...

Hey hey there ar, and welcome. Im also an aussie and work in a supermarket. LOL. But right now, im on holiday in the usa. LOL. Congrats to your hubby on his promo. Working at a supermarket has its good and bad points (as does all jobs) but as long as you are happy, its all good. LOL. You are fortunate that you can stay at home whle he works (im sure you do agree. ) That, I am jealous of. LOL. I was single for most of my chidlrens life and I had to work, but , no complaints here, that is just how it was/is. Love it and live it, thats what I say. LOL.

Very strong company - share price steady overall despite other US financials crashing. Subprime and dodgy asset exposure - almost zero.

Warren Buffet has around a 10% stake via Berkshire Hathaway, and he announced 5 years ago that subprime assets were toxic and not to be touched.

Not sure where they base their call centres, but has the reputation of being one of the strongest of all the US banks. :)

Forgot to say, I am a Data Manager for a large Engineering company. I sit at a desk most of the day, get around when I get the opportunity though :)

so $7 a share is quite a bit better than .90 cents.. no government involvement but apparently the FDIC is in favor of the merge with citigroup..

With Wells Fargo its a complete merge with no change to any of Wachovia.. they have a call center on the west coast so wont effect ours.. 3 of our board members go onto Wells Fargos board... its a much sweeter dealer for all concerned.

Still up in the air? I hope not... I hope this is solid.

With the tax breaks included in the Bailout It won't cost Wells Fargo a dime to acquire, it'll probably go thru.

Citi aren't happy, and sure the Fed won't be - if Wells trashes this agreement, it may be harder to engineer other bank rescues.

But, the Wells Fargo deal is good - almost too good, to be honest. WB was trading up to $3.5 a share before WF made their bid, so that a 100% premium on share price.
