to gaming on FaceBook. I can't stop spending real money to play several computer games there (damn that pay pal anyway). I like the virtual world of gaming as it takes my mind off my physical pain and I feel like a goddess creating my own kingdoms, designing houses, farms, aquariums and gardens with a click of a finger.
OK..now that I have admitted I have a problem is there a 12 step group for people with my addiction? :D

Ahh.....farm town.
My wife has been onto that for a bit, clicking away like a fiend.
Has quite a nice farm and garden now.
I think it appeals to them that have played with dolls as children.
My wife used to play with Barbi's and the like as a young girl, same as the other people who we know who play those games.
perhaps they have grown bored with mahjong:confused:.

If you're using gaming on facebook as a way to distract yourself from your own physical pain, I can only suggest that there are other ways of doing so that would bring you greater pleasure and provide more opportunities for interaction with other people. MMORPG's often run on a subscription basis by which you pay 15 bucks a month and are neither required nor able to spend more. There is also Second Life but because it works on a microtransaction model I don't suggest it. There are also the 4X games but those generally lack the social element. However they'd appeal to your empire-building fantasies.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but...

You don't need any of that. Pull the plug and step out into the real world, cold turkey.

I can relate regarding pain. Still, sitting in front of a monitor can't be better for your health than getting up out of a chair and walking around as much as you can stand. Body movement encourages endorphins and other naturally pain relieving chemicals into production.

Maybe I just don't get it...but in my mind real life is far better than any fantasy life. And I certainly wouldn't pay real money for imaginary life...

Hi Janz, addictions can be very difficult to break, and you might want to see someone who knows how to do this. If you need better pain meds, a doctor can help with that. There might be psychological issues that a therapist can help with. We all have our own issues to deal with, nothing to be ashamed of. It is good that you realize you have a problem. I haven't checked but I would not be surprised at all if there is a 12 step program for excessive internet, I know this is a real problem for some.

I spend a fair amount of time on the internet myself, but it hasn't interfered with other responsibilities I have. If it did, like you, I would seek help.

None of us here are really qualified to give you advice, but having said that, I will give you my suggestion anyway. For the next month, when you have the urge to go to the Facebook site and pay for a game, come to this website instead. And start a new thread. Even if it isn't one of your greatest threads ever. There are usually people around here to respond, maybe it is worth a try ??

fwiw, there are 12-step programs for internet addiction if you're truly concerned that it's a negative habit that needs to be broken.

Thanks for the advice but I am being a little tongue- in- cheek here fellas. Just wanted to start a different thread. I don't have an addictive personality at all. I do spend a fair amount of time on the internet because I am retired and I have the time. I do like to play the games on Facebook because it is a good creative and social outlet. As Shawn mentioned, FarmTown and Farmville are like making dioramas. Plus you make friends from all over the world whose virtual farms you can visit and we give "gifts" to each other.

Juan..you are a bit of a grump but I don't hold it against you. Yes, I do Yoga and I walk my 2 dogs between 2-5 miles a day. I live in the country so I am a bit socially isolated so my social time is here on IO and Facebook. However, I do find that becoming one with the WWW does keep my mind stimulated enough NOT to dwell on my physical pain...much better than being hooked on narcotics. :D

Sorry if you took me seriously...I think that it is interesting how all my "real" friends deserted me when I became chronically ill and I was no longer a human "doing." However, I am glad that I have virtual friends so thanks again for the concern. I am fine, really I am. :)

I do have an addictive personality and have stayed completly away from online gaming just for that reason...I don't trust myself.

Good news is I've overspent time on working my side business and thankfully this month it paid off with a $800 a month residual passive income raise! Incredible in my mind, and incentive to keep the nose out of the gaming and into the game!

(ya know we get out of the rat race when our passive income exceeds our expenses....)

Great news there wil.:D
Glad for ya.

As for the addictions....I am addicted to breathing....just can't seem to shake it.....eating too.....and drinking liquids....wow man:p...it's too much.;)

This addictions ideology is just bizarre as it takes a habit.... which is a choice, and it turns things around so that it becomes a disease or illness which the poor victim then needs treatment for.
This is just rubbish and a way to make work....and useless work it is.

Shawn, so smokers and alcoholics, how would you deal with these folks ?

Wow... I've never met someone who spends real money on those kind of games..... Why do you do it? Not being funny, I just mean what attracts you to pay the money? Like I play them but, if you work at it, you get the things you pay for, for free. Like example Mafia wars.. That's another just work and patience I found gets you the same stuff. :/ lol Perhaps I just dislike paying for things that much I dedicate time to a task like that lol.

Feel like a goddess? lol....

I have a solution!! *jestures to red curtains.. young lady wearing not much draws back the curtain, trumpet call*
*a baseball bat*
*picks up bat.*
*raises above head.*
*takes 12 steps bounding forward.*
*eradicates your router/modem*

Tada! Done :) No need to thank me.

I piss off the AA and 12 step folks...as while I was/am an alcoholic, I beat the issue by after 30 years learning to count to two. The only times I ever go beyond that is rarely at home or just as rarely when traveling and only have to push an elevator button to find my room.

So tell me,..... why this has to do with ME dealing with anyone???????

What people consume is their choice and really, that is where it ends.
It is such a cop out to say.....oh it wasn't really me.....I have a condition......I can't help it.....I am a victim.....
POPPYCOCK
People are entirely responsible for their choices.
All this AA and NA therapy is just the new confessional.
It reinforced personal weakness and makes people soft in the head (will). Which is the opposite of what they need.
People are the masters of their bodies. If they are not then they need to be taught.
Send 'em to boot camp for a while.
I don't care what people say they are "addicted" to, it is all based on a crap idea with zero merit.

I say these things from previous experience and beating my own addictions without the standard therapy.
My body....my decision. What do I want out of life?
It is a bit more involved than that, but I am not writing a thesis.
The main point is you are responsible for you and what you do and you can't fob things off on on some scapegoat.

Or I just could wait for lightning to strike the phone lines and fry our DSL modem as it has been done several times in the past. Now when we hear thunder we just unplug the phone line and viola no internet.

I don't spend very much on those items but the gamers on these games know how to hook people because in the games I play, they offer the cool stuff for cash and you can only buy cash with real money. I know that YoVille and Farmville both by Zynga do this. From what I can figure you cannot trade your coins for cash (real money stuff)..but at least now you can gift each other free gifts. So depending on how much you desire the gold (cash) items will determine if you pay "real" money. I also like to give away my real money items to my friends who cannot purchase those items. It is crazy but someone has to support the game developers..stimulating the economy and all the captialist crap, ya know.:D

Ya don't think it is possible that when folks spend $$$$ to design, build, produce and load a game onto the web their intention is to make multiples of those $$$$$ as a return on their investment??

Isn't that what I said or is your question to the masses?

suppose it was that I read some kind of surprise in your post that capitalist ventures are capitalistic...

So should a good capitalist prey on peoples addictions to make more money ??? Hmmm.

Does it matter if their product helps or hurts people ?

Oh, of course, take a look at the tobacco industry the last 150 years !!

(I think we are headed for the libertarian shuffle again :D)
