Myagician friends have been gnawing at the bit over this....one just got a Vegas gig, a permanent stage of his own, a week before the shutdown. He did half a dozen shows before the casino closed. Others, NYC, SfF, Hollywood, trying to reinvent themselves online....street performers, zero money in the hat if you can't attract a circle are doing tricks at stoplights with signs for venom, PayPal, etc... RIP Roy, hopefully your death will help others who are going G stir crazy to stay in a little longer, hone some routines and practice some new prestidigitation!

He was half of the comedy team "Stiller and Meara" almost up until her death, continuing to perform in other platforms including Seinfeld and others, plus their son, Ben Stiller, has continued in "the business". James Charles Mahoney and Celia Marcos both succumbed to the COVID-19 virus. He was in his 60s, she was 61.

"Who?" you ask?

Dr. James "Charlie" Mahoney was a pioneer in medicine, being one of, if not the first African American to graduate medical school and start practicing in New York back in the 1960s (might've been the 1980s) while Celia Marcos was a well-respected charge nurse in Los Angeles who lost her life because her employers didn't supply her with a proper mask when a COVID-19 positive patient "crashed" (the masks were locked up, costing precious time.) The only protection she had was a thin surgical mask. Her colleagues called her "ate", which is Filipino for "older sister" (she was originally from the Philippines.)

Both had plans for after the pandemic (the doctor wanted to go on another cruise with his family while the nurse wanted to go back to the Philippines to visit family still there as well as watch her grandchildren grow up.)

Here's Dr. Mahoney's obituary: https://dnyuz.com/2020/05/12/a-legend-at-a-brooklyn-hospital-dies-of-covid-19-he-ran-into-the-fire/ (I cannot find an obituary for Nurse Marcos.)

I take nothing away from the accomplishments of Dr. Mahoney. However, it should be pointed out that Howard University's medical school (Howard is a historic black university) was founded in 1868. If you were saying that Dr. Mahoney might have been the first African American physician in New York City, I would point out that the distinction probably goes to Dr. James McCune Smith who opened his NYC medical practice somewhere around 1837.

Carl Reiner passed away at the tender age of 98.

"Who? you ask?

Some unknown who started in the 1950s and continued writing/producing/acting almost to the day he died. Some of the people he worked with were Mary Tyler Moore, Mel Brooks, Steve Martin, Jerry Seinfeld...

Ach, here's his filmography: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005348/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0 (it's much easier than listing everyone he's worked with.)
