I don't think graduating from college makes you a great proof reader....and today with computers and spellcheck, relying on these things (like relying on GPS, your cell to remember numbers) those parts of our brain that used to handle spelling and gramatical mistakes, travel check points and phone numbers are deteriorating...this will only get worse in the future...except of course for those that are exceptional at those things...like proofreading.
When eye was righting knewsletters I wood include a sentence oar too of explanation. It would be in a itty bitty font...so tiny it just looked like a line down the fold of the center page of the newsletter...

I think graduating from a compositor's apprenticeship is a great grounding for a proof-reader.I don't think graduating from college makes you a great proof reader....
