Passings

For Ron and Chris,
Lo, there do I see my father.

Lo, there do I see my mother,
and my sisters, and my brothers.

Lo, there do I see the line of my people,
Back to the beginning!

Lo, they do call to me.

They bid me take my place among them,
In the halls of Valhalla!

Where the brave may live

Forever!

My regards on behalf of your friend, Chris. A man with stones enough to be a river patrol boat captain on the Mekong is worthy of profound respect.

George G. Shor Jr. passed away July 3. He was "the geophysicist whose studies of the ocean floor helped lay the foundation for the theory of tectonic plates and continental drift." He died in San Diego at the age of 86.

Ironic, I made a post referencing plate tectonics July 12, and I read the obit in the paper later that day.

Walter Cronkite has passed away, yesterday evening. I'm not certain how well he was known outside of the US, but here he was *the* evening news for a long time. I remember listening to him report the Apollo moon landings when I was a kid, and I remember the evening updates on the Viet Nam war. After he retired he did voice characters for children's programs and documentaries, particularly of US political figures. Cronkite was 92.

Frank McCourt, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Angela's Ashes, died Sunday at the age of 78 of metastatic melanoma. He was an eloquent speaker and a fine gentleman. I had the honor of attending one of his readings when he was on a book tour. From that book:

"When I look back on my childhood I wonder how I survived at all. It was, of course, a miserable childhood: the happy childhood is hardly worth your while. Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood."

Not sure this would be of interest to anybody else, but Guitar legend-inventor Les Paul dies at age 94 - Yahoo! News

He was from near here and very influential to music. What's real funny is that he pretty much kept playing almost to the end (one of his concerts had another relatively local guitarist, which I think I posted the performance on the YouTube thread) and he taught Steve Miller of rock and roll fame.

Just seconding the Les Paul coverage:
BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Rock guitar pioneer Les Paul dies

Invented multi-track recording and overdubbing as well as the 8 track? Never knew that - quite remarkable.

He also either invented or perfected the solid-body electric guitar. He lived in Waukesha for several decades (which is where he met/taught Steve Miller how to play guitar.)

He was one sharp tack.
