Eugene Polley just passed away at the age of 96.

Not familiar with the name? You might be familiar with his invention/innovation: the tv remote control.

I realize that this passing is old news, but Dr. Oliver Sacks passed in August (I think.)

"Who was he?" you ask?

Just one of the top neurosurgeons in the United States (from what I understand.) I believe that the movie Awakenings was based on a book he wrote revolving around several case studies he was involved in, plus he wrote several other books based on cases he worked with and he was a frequent guest on Radiolab prior to his succumbing to cancer.

Cassius Clay just passed today, succumbing to Parkinson's Disease.

"Who's Cassius Clay?" you ask?

You might know him better as Muhammad Ali.

Muhammad Ali.
I was interested to learn that his is the only star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to not be on the sidewalk. He refused the star, stating that he wouldn't let anyone walk all over the name of the prophet Muhammad the way so many people tried to walk over him (the boxer) during his career. The organization that decides on the stars agreed and so it is specially installed on the wall of a building in Hollywood.

The Nobel-laureate Elie Wiesel passed, one of the last handful of Holocaust survivors who were old enough to actually remember what happened then. He was 87 years old.

Rudy van Gelder passed away Thursday at the age of 91.

"Who's he?" you ask?

Just the guy who helped define the sound of jazz on records. He worked with such people as Miles Davis, James Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Esther Phillips and Grover Washington, Jr. He was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master back in 2009 plus he received lifetime achievement awards from the Recording Academy in 2012 and from the Audio Engineering Society in 2013.

Not sure where to put this one, but a rather important person in world politics passed: Fidel Castro.
I don't have to explain who he was, correct?

Honest question ...

Is it morally wrong to rejoice at anyone's death?

Proverbs 24:17 says:
Do not rejoice when your enemy falls,
And do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles ...

Can only express my opinion. I never 'rejoice' at someone's death. I'm often very pleased that a bad person has died. There is no pleasure in it, just an acknowledgement that a bad person can no longer do any more damage in this reality.

I agree. Back when bin Laden was assassinated, I was saddened to see many were overjoyed (understandable tho) and some said things like "we didn't have to follow a proper ritual when releasing his body in the ocean" or worse, "we should've wrapped his remains in pig skin" ...

Yes, bin Laden was a rabid dog and needed to be put down. I feel a sense of relief that he is gone. If his death contributes to al Qaida's demise, that's just great. We needed to stop Bin Laden from hurting us. And if that takes killing him, then it had to be done. He is stopped. That's good enough for me.

I understand that it is only natural to feel extreme anger and strong hated towards the man like bin Laden or Castro, especially if you have lost someone in his atrocious acts. Do I sound insensitive to those who lost loved ones because of this terrorist or dictator if I say "you shouldn't rejoice over his death" ... ?
